Acupuncture Basel
Traditional Chinese Medicine in Basel — individual, holistic and effective.
Book AppointmentWhat is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a millennia-old healing method of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), increasingly used in Basel as an effective complement to conventional medicine. According to the traditional view of Chinese medicine, the human body is permeated by the life energy Qi. This flows through 12 main pathways - known as meridians - along which the classical acupuncture points are located.
During an acupuncture treatment, fine sterile single-use needles are inserted at specific points to regulate the flow of energy and release blockages. The needle effect can be individually adjusted through specific needling techniques and by rotating or moving the needles up and down - every treatment is tailored personally to you.
Acupuncture demonstrably influences muscle tension and the perception of pain. This has increasingly led to its adoption in orthopaedics and pain therapy. In particular, local treatment of painful muscle tension is possible - in classical acupuncture these are referred to as Ah-shi points and essentially correspond to today's trigger points. More recent scientific studies provide increasing evidence for pain-relieving processes in the central nervous system.

Acupuncture Treatment Process - What to Expect
1. Initial Consultation and TCM Diagnosis
Every acupuncture treatment at our Basel practice begins with a thorough initial consultation. We take time to understand your medical history, examine your tongue and feel your pulse - classical diagnostic tools of TCM that provide a holistic picture of your health.
2. Individual Treatment
Based on the diagnosis, we establish a treatment plan tailored specifically to you. The needling session itself typically lasts 30 to 60 minutes. The fine single-use needles are inserted gently - most patients find this pleasantly relaxing.
3. Course of Treatment
Depending on the condition, we typically recommend 3 to 12 sessions. Many patients report a significant improvement after just a few treatments. Chronic conditions often require a longer series of treatments for lasting results.
Acupuncture Risks and Side Effects
When properly applied, acupuncture is a very safe treatment method. We use exclusively sterile single-use needles, reducing the risk of infection to a minimum. In rare cases, small bruises at the needle site or brief local discomfort may occur. Occasional temporary reactions such as mild dizziness or a feeling of weakness have been reported - these pass quickly. Similar to other natural healing methods, a brief initial worsening may occur at the start before a clear improvement sets in.
Acupuncture Contraindications
No absolute contraindications to acupuncture are currently known. Please inform us however if any of the following circumstances apply, so we can adjust the treatment accordingly:
- Pregnancy
- Blood clotting disorders (e.g. thrombocytopenia)
- Psychiatric conditions
- Contact allergies (e.g. nickel, chromium or silicone)
- Seizure disorders (epilepsy)
- Other serious conditions
