Endocrine Disorders
What is Endocrine Disorders?
Definition
Endocrine disorders are diseases of the hormonal system in which hormone-producing glands produce too much, too little, or incorrectly composed hormones. The most common include thyroid and adrenal disorders as well as diabetes.
Common Causes
- Thyroid disorders (hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism)
- Insulin resistance and diabetes mellitus
- Adrenal insufficiency
- Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
- Pituitary gland disorders
- Chronic stress
Physiological and Pathological Mechanisms
- Faulty feedback loops in the hormonal system
- Autoimmune processes targeting hormone-producing glands
- Chronic stress response with cortisol dysregulation
How Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) understands Endocrine Disorders
Hormonal disorders in TCM frequently correspond to an imbalance of Kidney Yin and Yang (the Kidney system governs the body's fundamental system). Spleen Qi deficiency and Liver Qi stagnation also play a role.
Treatment Principles
Acupuncture
Points to regulate the endocrine system: CV 6, KD 3, SP 6, BL 23, and Ren Mai points harmonise Kidney Yin and Yang.
Tuina Treatment
Abdominal massage to stimulate digestion and hormonal metabolism, and back treatment along the Bladder meridians.
Traditional Chinese Medicine
Depending on the pattern: tonifying formulas for Kidney Yin or Yang, Spleen Qi, or Blood.
Lifestyle Adjustments
Balanced diet, stress management, regular exercise, adequate sleep, and reduction of environmental toxins.
