Long COVID
What is Long COVID?
Definition
Long COVID refers to persistent symptoms following a COVID-19 infection that last longer than 12 weeks. Typical complaints include ongoing fatigue, shortness of breath, concentration difficulties (brain fog), as well as pain and sleep disturbances.
Common Causes
- Persisting viral components or immune activation
- Autoimmune reactions following COVID-19
- Damage to blood vessel walls (endotheliopathy)
- Mitochondrial dysfunction
- Dysautonomia (disorder of the autonomic nervous system)
Physiological and Pathological Mechanisms
- Chronic low-grade inflammation
- Microthrombi in small blood vessels
- Neuronal damage caused by the virus
How Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) understands Long COVID
Long COVID in TCM corresponds to a residual pathogen (lingering heat-toxins) combined with Qi and Yin deficiency and Blood stasis, leading to persistent complaints. Lung Qi is weakened and the Shen is unsettled.
Treatment Principles
Acupuncture
Points such as LU 9, ST 36, SP 6, PC 6, and HT 7 strengthen Lung Qi, nourish Yin and Blood, and calm the spirit.
Tuina Treatment
Gentle treatment of the back and Lung zone to strengthen Lung Qi and promote circulation.
Traditional Chinese Medicine
Post-COVID-specific formulas to resolve residual pathogens, nourish the Lungs and Qi, and dissolve Blood stasis.
Lifestyle Adjustments
Paced activity with adequate rest, a low-stimulation environment for brain fog, nutrient-rich food, and plenty of water.
