Prenatal Preparation

What is Prenatal Preparation?

Definition

Prenatal preparation with TCM encompasses the care of pregnant women to promote a healthy pregnancy, relieve typical discomforts, and prepare for birth. TCM can be safely and effectively used as a complementary method.

Common Causes

  • Typical pregnancy discomforts (nausea, back pain, fatigue)
  • Preparation of the uterus and pelvis for birth
  • Stress reduction during pregnancy
  • Breech presentation of the baby (from 34th week of gestation)

Physiological and Pathological Mechanisms

  • Hormonal changes of pregnancy
  • Mechanical strain from the growing baby
  • Altered circulation and fluid distribution

How Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) understands Prenatal Preparation

Pregnancy consumes Kidney Jing and maternal Blood. TCM nourishes Yin and Blood, strengthens Kidney Qi, and harmonises the ascending patterns that cause nausea and other discomforts.

Treatment Principles

Acupuncture

Gentle points such as PC 6 (for nausea), SP 6, KD 3, and BL 67 (for breech presentation, from 34th week with moxibustion). Contraindicated points are strictly avoided.

Tuina Treatment

Gentle back and pelvic massage to relieve back pain and promote overall wellbeing.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

A very limited selection of safe herbs – many herbs are contraindicated in pregnancy. Only under expert supervision.

Lifestyle Adjustments

Balanced diet with folic acid and iron, gentle exercise (prenatal yoga), adequate sleep, stress reduction.
