How Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) understands Back Pain
In TCM, back pain is often attributed to the Kidney meridian, as the Kidneys nourish the spine and bones. Common patterns include Kidney Yang deficiency (cold in the back) or Qi and Blood stagnation.
Treatment Principles
Acupuncture
Points along the Bladder and Governing Vessel meridians (BL 23, BL 40, GV 4) are used to relieve pain and strengthen Kidney Qi.
Tuina Treatment
Treatment of the paravertebral musculature, joint mobilisation, and traction techniques to decompress the spine.
Traditional Chinese Medicine
Formulas to strengthen Kidney Yang and expel cold-dampness (e.g. Du Huo Ji Sheng Wan).
Lifestyle Adjustments
Ergonomic workstation, regular movement (swimming, yoga), targeted back-strengthening exercises, avoidance of prolonged sitting.
