Insomnia
What is Insomnia?
Definition
Insomnia is a sleep disorder in which sufferers have difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or wake too early. It leads to daytime fatigue, concentration problems, and reduced quality of life.
Common Causes
- Stress and psychological strain
- Anxiety disorders or depression
- Irregular sleep habits
- Pain or physical illness
- Medication or substance effects
- Excessive consumption of caffeine or alcohol
Physiological and Pathological Mechanisms
- Overactivation of the sympathetic nervous system
- Disrupted melatonin and cortisol rhythm
- Hyperarousal – chronic overstimulation of the brain
How Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) understands Insomnia
In TCM, insomnia is often attributed to the Heart Spirit (Shen). Patterns such as Heart Blood deficiency, Heart-Kidney disharmony, or ascending Liver Fire disturb the tranquillity of the Shen and prevent restorative sleep.
Treatment Principles
Acupuncture
Points such as HT 7, SP 6, KD 3, and Yin Tang calm the spirit, nourish Heart Blood, and promote natural sleep rhythm.
Tuina Treatment
Gentle acupressure and head massage to calm the nervous system and promote relaxation.
Traditional Chinese Medicine
Classical sleep-promoting formulas such as Suan Zao Ren Tang nourish Heart Blood and calm the spirit.
Lifestyle Adjustments
Fixed sleep times, a dark and cool bedroom, digital detox before bedtime, relaxation exercises, light evening meals.
