Cupping Therapy Basel
Traditional cupping treatment at Anfang TCM Praxis Basel — natural relief from tension, pain and circulatory disorders.
Book AppointmentWhat is Cupping Therapy?
Cupping is one of the oldest therapeutic techniques in the world, having developed in nearly every ancient medical culture. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) it has been used for thousands of years to harmonise the body's energy flow, release tension and activate the body's self-healing powers.
During cupping therapy, special cups are placed on the skin where a negative pressure is created by heat or a suction pump. This negative pressure acts deep into the tissue, promoting blood circulation and lymphatic flow. From a TCM perspective, this harmonises the life energy Qi and dissolves stagnant blood (Yu Xue).
At Anfang TCM Praxis Basel we apply two forms of cupping: dry cupping (without breaking the skin) and sliding cupping, where the cups are moved over oiled skin to treat larger muscle groups. The method is tailored individually to your complaints.
How Does Cupping Therapy Basel Work?
The most common explanation for the effectiveness of cupping is a long-term improvement in blood circulation in specific areas of the body, from which the metabolism and lymphatic flow in that area benefit. The influence on internal organs is explained by the connection of certain reflex zones to the organs, as described by TCM.
From a Western perspective, the negative pressure stimulates mechanoreceptors in the skin and musculature, triggering local inflammatory responses and activating the body's own healing reaction. At the same time, adhesions in the fascia are released and microcirculation is improved — comparable to a deep-acting massage, but from the inside.
Which Conditions Does Cupping Therapy Basel Help?
Cupping therapy is used in our Basel practice for a wide range of complaints:
- Back and neck pain — tension, blockages, disc problems
- Shoulder pain and tennis elbow — muscular imbalances and overuse
- Headaches and migraines — especially when caused by neck tension
- Sciatica and leg pain — relief of the sciatic nerve
- Colds and bronchitis — strengthening the immune defences
- Fatigue and exhaustion — activation of life energy
- Digestive problems — abdominal cupping to stimulate the digestive organs
- Sports injuries and muscle soreness — faster recovery
Cupping Therapy Treatment Process — What to Expect
1. Initial Consultation and TCM Diagnosis
At your first appointment we take time for a thorough conversation about your complaints, medical history and lifestyle. Based on the TCM diagnosis (tongue diagnosis, pulse diagnosis) we jointly determine the appropriate cupping points and treatment method.
2. The Cupping Treatment
The cups are placed on the selected skin areas and remain there for 5 to 15 minutes. The negative pressure is clearly perceptible but should not be painful. After the treatment, reddish to purplish discolorations typically appear on the skin — these are intentional, indicate the effect of the treatment, and disappear within a few days.
3. Course of Treatment
Depending on your complaints we recommend 3 to 8 sessions at regular intervals. Many patients report noticeable relief even after the first treatment. For chronic complaints a regular series of treatments is advisable.
Cupping Therapy Risks and Side Effects
In general, cupping has very few side effects and is usually very well tolerated. Bruising (haematomas) caused by cupping is expected and part of the treatment. These often remain visible for several days. Pain afterwards is rare and no stronger than mild muscle soreness.
In very rare cases strong negative pressure can be associated with pain. A small risk of infection exists only with wet cupping — we work exclusively with sterile single-use materials and the highest hygiene standards.
Cupping Therapy Contraindications
Please inform us before treatment if any of the following apply to you:
- Pregnancy
- Blood clotting disorders or taking blood thinners
- Inflammatory skin conditions or open wounds in the treatment area

Absolute contraindications are rare — speak to us and we will be happy to adapt the treatment to your individual situation.
