What is Tuina Massage?

Chinese Tuina massage — also known as "Anmo massage" — is one of the oldest therapeutic treatment forms of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is based on the theories of Zang and Fu organs and the meridians (energy pathways), combining these with anatomical and Western medical knowledge. Tuina is not an ordinary relaxation massage, but a targeted medical therapy.

At our Anfang TCM Praxis in Basel, we apply Tuina in a targeted and individual way — tailored to your complaints, your constitution, and your treatment goals. Every session begins with a thorough TCM diagnosis so that we can select the right techniques and meridians for you.

How does Tuina Massage Basel work?

During Tuina treatment, manual techniques are applied to specific points on the body surface — along meridians, acupuncture points, and areas of complaint. The aim is to promote the flow of life energy Qi, restore the balance between Yin and Yang, and strengthen the immune system.

Because Tuina stimulates circulation and metabolism, it is especially suitable for patients with chronic conditions or physical weakness. It is completely free of side effects and appropriate for people of all ages.

Which complaints does Tuina Massage Basel help with?

Tuina can be used for a broad spectrum of complaints:

  • Back and neck pain, disc complaints
  • Shoulder and knee pain, joint problems
  • Muscle tension and hardening
  • Chronic pain conditions (fibromyalgia, etc.)
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Digestive complaints and irritable bowel syndrome
  • Stress, exhaustion, burnout
  • Sleep disorders and inner restlessness
  • Menstrual complaints and hormonal imbalances
  • Restricted mobility after injuries

Tuina Massage treatment process — What to expect

1. Initial consultation and TCM diagnosis

At your first appointment, we take time for a detailed discussion of your complaints, lifestyle, and health history. The TCM diagnosis includes tongue and pulse examination as well as a physical examination of the affected areas.

2. The Tuina treatment

Based on the diagnosis, your therapist selects the appropriate Tuina techniques: pressure techniques, kneading, rolling movements, joint manipulations, and targeted point stimulations. The treatment typically lasts 30-60 minutes.

3. Treatment course and aftercare

After the treatment, we discuss the further course together and recommend complementary measures such as acupuncture, herbal therapy, or home exercises where appropriate. We accompany you step by step towards greater wellbeing.

Tuina Massage risks and side effects

Tuina is a very well-tolerated therapy. Possible reactions after treatment include:

  • Temporary fatigue or mild discomfort directly after the session
  • Mild, temporary soreness (similar to slight muscle ache)
  • Local redness or warmth at treated areas — completely normal and desirable

These reactions generally subside within 24-48 hours and are signs that the body is responding to the treatment.

Tuina Massage contraindications

Please inform us before treatment if any of the following apply to you:

  • Acute infections or inflammation
  • Severe cardiovascular conditions
  • Open wounds or severe skin conditions
  • Pregnancy (special care with certain points)
  • Cancer
  • Osteoporosis or bone fractures in the treated area

We always adapt the treatment individually — speak to us, and we will find the best solution for your situation together.

Frequently asked questions about Tuina Massage in Basel

How many Tuina treatments do I need?

Depending on your condition, we recommend 3-10 sessions. For acute tension or pain, noticeable improvements often appear after just 2-3 treatments. For chronic complaints, we plan an individual treatment schedule together.

Is Tuina massage painful?

Tuina is fundamentally a pleasant, gentle therapy. Depending on the technique and condition, you may experience a comfortable feeling of pressure. Mild, temporary soreness similar to muscle ache directly after treatment is normal and subsides quickly.

What is the difference between Tuina and a regular massage?

Tuina is a medical therapy within Traditional Chinese Medicine that works specifically with meridians, acupuncture points, and TCM diagnosis. It goes far beyond a relaxing massage and treats concrete complaints therapeutically.

Is Tuina massage covered by health insurance?

As an EMR- and ASCA-recognised practice, our Tuina treatments are covered up to 80% by many Swiss supplementary insurance plans. We recommend checking your insurance policy before the treatment.
